Ascomata 134-144 x 74-133 µm, scattered, immersed becoming erumpent, otiolate, with a short beak, globose, membranous, thin-walled, brown to dark brown, covered with a loose tomentum of dark brown hyphae. |
Peridium: |
Peridium of 4-6 layers of hyaline pseudoparenchymatic cells, 10-16 µm thick, of textura angularis in face view; cells compressed laterally, 6-10 x 2-4 µm. |
Beak: |
Beaks short, 31-40 x 23-30 µm, periphysate, wall two to four cell layers wide. |
Hamathecium: |
Hamathecium composed of unbranched paraphyses, 70-82 µm long, 3-5 septate, broader at the base, narrowing toward the apex, constricted at the septa. |
Ascus: |
Asci numerous, (66-) 70-90 (-94) x 11.7-12.5 (-13) µm, basal, fasciculate, unitunicate, cylindro-clavate, thin-walled, roundly truncate at the apex, with apical pore, apical apparatus absent, tapering to a short hoof-shaped stipe, with 8 uniseriate to overlapping biseriate ascospores. |
Ascospore: |
Ascospores 15.6-18 x (3.9-) 5.8-7.8 µm, rhomboid, rounded at apices, aseptate, hyaline, containing numerous oil droplets, forcibly discharged from asci, germinating from one side, surrounded by a tetraradiate sheath. |
Sheath: |
Sheath staining in India ink, arms of sheath expanding in water, (23.4-) 27-35 x 7-11.7 µm but remaining unexpanded in lactic acid, 6 x 4 µm. |
Appendage: |
Culture: |
Colonies on corn meal agar grown at 24 C, light pink and on peptone yeast extract glucose agar, dark pink. Mycelium immersed in agar, composed of branched, septate, hyaline hyphae. Ascomata formed at the center of colonies on CMA, superficial to partially immersed in the agar. Culture from the Holotype, ATCC 200781. |
