Description

Habit: Superficial to partially immersed on woody debris; clustered to scattered.
Ascomata: Ascomata superficial to partly immersed, globose to subglobose, ostiolate, hyaline, 139-208 x 129-198 µm. Aniptodera limnetica - Ascomata
Peridium: Peridium membranous, hyaline, of textura angularis in face view.
Beak: Beaks cylindrical, long, periphysate, 59-178 x 40-69 µm. Aniptodera limnetica - Beak
Hamathecium: Chains of large, thin-walled cells (catenophyses?)
Ascus: Asci fasciculate at base of ascoma, cylindrical to clavate, unitunicate, thin-walled, containing eight ascospores, with apical pore and cytoplasm retracted below the ascus apex, deliquescent or not, 50-70 x 12-17 µm.
Ascospore: Ascospores one-septate, hyaline, ellipsoidal, frequently allantoid, thick walled, (wall 2-2.8 µm thick), 18-24 (x=21.9) x 8-11 (x=9.5) µm. Aniptodera limnetica - Ascospore

Type & Location: HOLOTYPE: NY - Slide made from a specimen on sycamore twigs (Platanus occidentalis L.) submerged in Jordan Creek, a tributary of the Salt Fork of the Vermilion River, Vermilion County, east central Illinois, from June 1978 to May 1980, J-143-1A. Isotypes: NY - slides of the same material, J-143-1B-F.
Other Specimens: USA: Illinois, Union Co., Wolf Lake, March 19, 1974, from submerged wood, CA Shearer, CS539-2; same location, August 6, 1974, CS 539-1.
