Description

Habit: Ascomata immersed or partially immersed in wood.
Ascomata: Ascomata on wood 250–300 x 230–280 mm, partially immersed to immersed in the substrate, globose to subglobose, membranous, black, ostiolate. Luttrellia halonata - Ascomata
Peridium: Peridium 10–15 mm thick, composed of 5–6 cell layers of dark, globose to elongated cells.
Beak: Neck 50 x 55 mm, cylindrical, dark brown.

Ascus: Asci 145–165 x 25–32 mm, unitunicate, cylindrical, short pedicellate, thin walled, lacking an apical pore, 4-spored, uniseriate, irregularly arranged, early deliquescent. Luttrellia halonata - Ascus
Ascospore: Ascospores 36–52 x 26–32 mm (mean = 44.5 x 28.0 mm, n = 30), broadly ellipsoidal-fusiform to ellipsoidal, hyaline, 5-septate, not constricted at septa, thick-walled (3.0–5.0 um), surrounded by a thick, gelatinous sheath about 5–10 mm wide.
