Description
|
Habit: |
Ascomata immersed in epidermis of woody debris, at times appearing as a small papillae, scattered or gregarious. |
|
Ascomata: |
Ascomata 280–293 x 195–203 µm, ellipsoid to sphaeroid, dark brown, immersed in epidermis, scattered or gregarious, at times appearing as small papillae. |
|
Peridium: |
Peridium (15.5-) 19.5–27 µm thick, composed of 4 to 6 layers of small pseudoparenchymatic cells; cells 6–14 x 4–10 µm, of textura angularis, compressed, at times intermixed with host cells. |
|
Beak: |
Beak 97.5–105 x 58.5–74 µm, central, clypeate. |
|
Hamathecium: |
Hamathecium of cellular pseudoparaphyses, 1.5–2.5 µm wide, occasionally wider at the base, filamentous, with gel coating, branching or at times anastomosing. |
|
Ascus: |
Asci 94–100 x 12–16 µm, clavate, tapering to a hoof-shaped stalk, fissitunicate, thick-walled at the apex, persistent, fasciculate, with 8 overlapping biseriate ascospores. |
|
Ascospore: |
Ascospores (24-) 26–32 (-36) x 6–10 (-12) µm, oblong-fusiform, broadly rounded at the apices, straight or curved, hyaline, 1- septate when young, becoming 3- septate at maturity, guttulate in each cell, strongly constricted at mid septum, constricted or not at other septa, central cells broader than end cells, with a thick gelatinous sheath 2.5–3.5 µm in diam. |
|
Sheath: |
Thick gelatinous sheath surrounding the entire ascospore. |
|

Substratum: |
Corticated woody debris. |
Habitat: |
Mostly terrestrial. |
Distribution: |
North America (WI), Europe |
Pertinent Literature: |
Fallah & Shearer 2001 |
Comments: |
Although M. eburnea is known mostly from terrestrial habitats, it occurred on submerged wood (Alnus or Acer ?) in Trout Lake, WI. This species may be an immigrant species that survives well in some aquatic habitats. |
